Academic Profile :

Dr. Arup Ranjan Mukhopadhyay is working as a faculty [Senior Technical Officer (Professor Grade)] in the SQC & OR Division of the Indian Statistical Institute, for more than 31 years, which involves applied research, teaching (essentially in the M.Tech. (QROR) curriculum of ISI), training and consultancy in the field of Quality Management and Operations Research. He has been elected to the Council, which is the highest policy and decision making body in ISI, as the Head, SQC & OR Division, for 2020-2022. He has published many papers in renowned national and international journals. He has a B.Tech. in Textile Technology with First Class from the Government College of Engineering and Textile Technology, affiliated to Calcutta University in 1983, a Post-Graduate Diploma in SQC & OR in 1985 from Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and two-year Specialist Development Fellowship Program from ISI in 1989. He has obtained Ph.D. (Engineering) from Jadavpur University in 2007 in the area of Quality Engineering and Six Sigma. He is a Certified Lead Assessor for assessing the implementation of the Quality Management System (QMS) in an organization in line with the requirements of ISO-9000 QMS. He has successfully guided three students for Ph.D. work in the field of Total Quality Management with an emphasis on higher education and other servicec sectors, Lean Six Sigma and Environmental Engineering. Currently, he is guiding research scholars for Ph.D. work in the area of Sustainable Development, Supply Chain Management and Statistical Process Control.

Dr. Mukhopadhyay has worked extensively in the industry-academia interface for providing consultancy and training to the engineers, technologists, scientists and executives in design, development and implementation of Quality, Reliability and Operations Research systems including promotional activities, project work, case studies, industrial research & development and servicing of plants. Before joining ISI he had worked as the SQC-in-Charge for one year in 1986 in the Jayashree Textiles Ltd., Rishra, West Bengal, a unit of the Aditya Birla Group.  The kinds of industry where he has provided such services are listed below:

• He has acted as the Coordinator of the Central SQC Office in ISI, Kolkata, to coordinate the activities of different outlying SQC & OR Units located across India during 19 September 2008 to 17 Sept 2010.
• He has acted as a member of the Ph.D./D.Sc. committee for the SQC & OR Division.
• During 2012 to 2018 he has acted as the Member-Convener of the Research Fellows Advisory Committee (RFAC) in Quality, Reliability & Operations Research.
• Since April 2008 he has been working as a member of the Travel Grants Committee (TGC) of ISI.
• Since September 2020 he has been elected to the ISI Council, the highest policy and decision making body, as Head, SQC & OR Division, for 2 years.
